Harlan is a small logging and farming community in the Oregon Coast Range. Larry was raised there along with his 3 sisters. He is the oldest sibling and the only one who has moved away form the area. The past and the present of this small community figures large in his work, and is tinged with his understanding of the daily struggles of life in a remote valley, experiencing it both as an insider and an outsider.
